Introduction

There are hundreds of essential oils to choose from. How on earth could a person even know where to begin and what to buy to slowly grow their stash of essential oils to help them with optimizing their health? I don’t think I could narrow down my supply because I am so fond of them, but if I had to choose only five, I’d choose these to start with.

Overview

I would like to clarify up front that I am not an expert in essential oils. I am just sharing what I have personally experienced when it comes to using essential oils for my health. The number one reason I use essential oils is because they primarily focus on application to the outside of the body. I am not bringing it into my body orally.

My DISH philosophy

My new philosophy of a complimentary body system we aren’t aware of, I believe, sorts good from bad for our bodies. I believe mine is faulty is why I have had autoimmune health challenges in the past. The key to this new thought is to create what I call a DISH on the body. It is basically making a frequency on the outside of my body that my body was unable to make on its own because the lymphatic system was not working properly.

I explain this concept in this blog post here, What is DISH? Or you can learn about the entire hypothesis broken down for you in my book, Health Backwards: An Original Look from a Different Perspective.

DISH is a concept and term I came up with. It has two jobs. 1. Shield the body 2. Sort what the Body Encounters When DISH is doing its job, I am winning against my health challenges. When it is NOT doing its job, I am losing. It's that simple. (But it's not that easy. But then again, autoimmune diseases aren't easy either.)

General Remarks

There are many different brands of essential oils available. I tend to stick with whichever brand works for me first. The main brand I tend to select is NOW. However, occasionally, I use Young Living essential oils. They have some blends of oil that are unmatched anywhere else in my journeys.

Do keep in mind everyone reacts differently to essential oils, so make sure you contact a healthcare provider before using them. All of the oils I have listed  here were recommended to me by the homeopathic doctor I was frequenting.

1. Lavender

Brand and Price:

NOW® 4 fl oz, about $26 ($6.50/ounce)

Why Lavender Oil:

I am a HUGE advocate for everyone having lavender essential oil in their home. I think it should be a part of any first aid kit. It is very inexpensive and can be used straight or diluted. It is excellent for treating minor burns, bruises, muscle aches, and , for me, chelating metal from my body.

My Experience with Lavender Oil:

I am very impressed with how well it works on burns. I keep a bottle of it in my kitchen, because I am an absent-minded cook sometimes. We cook with only iron skillets and sometimes I try to not use a hot mitten when I should. For our family, it has also been the best go to remedy for accidental sunburns. We put a few drops in a small bowl of water, soak a hand towel in it, wring out the hand towel and place it on different locations on our body.

I used to joke around about how I could not get a tan. I would burn, peel, and then freckle no matter how careful I tried to be. I have a son who is like this too. Lavendar has been a life saver.

2. Tea Tree

Brand and Price:

NOW® 4 fl oz, about $20 ($5.00/ounce)0

Why Tea Tree Oil:

I particularly appreciate tea tree essential oil for its cleansing properties. It is handy for fighting mold and giving the house a fresh smell.

My Experience with Tea Tree Oil:

I fill a spray bottle with water and put 3-5 drops into it. I then use this to spray the filter in our house once a week. It helped us with our respiratory challenges when we were temporarily unable to find the location of the mildew smell that seemed to linger and cause us to cough. (BTW: Problem corrected. It was condensation issues with the air conditioner.)

I personally have also used it when I needed to reduce inflammation because I had not found the source of what was causing me inflammation at that time.

I have recently found out that it is supposed to help with acne. My teenager is interested in giving this a try.

3. Hyssop

Brand and Price:

NOW® 1 fl oz, about $24 ($24.00/ounce)

Why Hyssop Oil:

I was recommended this oil for the respiratory problems my son and I had. Hyssop essential oil is antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial. My homeopath thought it would help with our lungs as well as help reduce any residual scarring as well from my Caesarean deliveries.

My Experience with Hyssop Oil:

For a season of time, we used to place this oil—and the fifth oil I’ll be mentioning—on the bottom of our children’s feet at night. For some of them, it caused their feet to be yellow in the morning. We were told it was ‘toxins’ coming out. It did cause some of us to develop what would be called a plantar wart, but it was interesting, because it didn’t show up on the weight-bearing area like most plantar warts are known to do. For each person who ended up getting one, it was on their lung meridian point, by their big toes. Incidentally, nobody had respiratory problems that winter.

4. White Angelica

Brand and Price:

Young Living® .17 fl oz, about $47 ($280.00/ounce)

Why White Angelica Oil:

The short answer, because it worked. Sometimes the ingredients or reasoning behind what an essential oil is supposed to do or not do is confusing. I’m not sure why it worked for me. I was told how it was spiritual protection, emotional support, and aura cleansing. I didn’t know what to think about it. But it did help.

My Experience with White Angelica Oil:

In fact, it seemed to be more helpful than the medication I needed to take. Or at least the results were more quickly visible to me. Since it is a blend, I am unsure of what particular ingredient I needed, or if in fact, I needed it as a combination in order for it to be effective. To me, years later, realizing I was making a manual DISH helped this to make more sense. In fact, this is when I discovered (my hypothesis) of our energy fields being a closed system. I couldn’t afford to keep applying this oil to myself. It was expensive for me at the time. However, what I so thankfully discovered was that if I placed a drop on a small piece of a cotton ball and taped it to a primary meridian point on my body, I didn’t not need to keep reapplying it! It lasted until the cotton ball fell off.

5. Thieves

Brand and Price:

Young Living® .17 fl oz, about $24 ($141.00/ounce)

Why Thieves Oil:

This essential oil is known for boosting the immune system and helping the respiratory system. It is antibacterial and fights infections. To me, it sounded like it was almost the jack of all trades to keep all my basis covered.

My Experience with Thieves Oil:

I know that when it came to kiddos and cat scratches, spraying a diluted thieves mixed in water to the injured area possibly was the source for why none of them seemed to get infected. I also already shared about how I used it in conjunction with hyssop oil and it seemed to strengthen our family’s overall health for the winter season in cold Montana. Of this short list, thieves oil is the only one I took orally. (By recommendation, do not try this without consulting a professional.) It appeared to help curb an internal staph infection. I was having a difficult time getting the upper hand on it. It’s my go to solution when I can’t seem to figure out what essential oil I should use in a given situation.

Conclusion

I think essential oils can give us the needed lift up when we are struggling with our health. I believe a significant reason why is because for the most part it is done externally. I think we are helping our DISH manually so we can get back on track with having our bodies do what they were meant to do.
